come up with a policy you can recommend to president obama on the air right now that would be better than the minimum wage. because recall, 40% of unemployed people today are long-term unemployed, disproportionately in the bottom 20% and those people will be hurt by minimum wage increases. but you and i agree that minimum wage people could make more money to support their families better. what's a better policy starting right now that president obama should be talking about instead of what he's doing, which is hurting poor people such they can make more money no matter how much it costs. >> look, just to be clear. i like the question, but i don't agree with the premise. i do think a moderate increase would help. to answer the part of your question that i agree with, here's what i think he should do. the earned income tax is a very important pro work subsidy. this is a good way to help low-wage people. but for childless adults, adults who don't have kids, it's rea y really -- i would increase the childless adult part of the earned income credit so that single folks can make a decent w

pulling up to air force one right now, just watch these pictures. president barack obama will be joined on the trip by former president george w. bush, his wife laura and former secretary of state secretary of state hillary rodham clinton. former president bill clinton will also be going to the funeral of nelson mandella and we are watching the vehicle doors in front of air force one. and we see first lady michelle obama getting out one side and president barack obama getting out the other. we are about to walk up the steps of air force one and we can tell you jimmy carter and former president bill clinton will also be going to the memorial but they will be traveling separately. first lady michelle obama is getting ready to take off from there heading to south africa where they will attend the funeral and we will watch them walk up the steps. people in south africa are still gathering outside the home in yes johannesburg. and they will hold the memorial in a soccer area one that holds 9 5,000 people. they will hold the memorial wednesday through friday and then he will be buried

. that's right. that is their number. more than 20 times the $80 billion price tag that the obama administration puts into the regulations. this new report put up on the libertarian competitive enterprise institute marginally funded by the coke brothers who brought that information. illinois democratic governor pat quinn this week signed a new legislation intended to reform the state's massively underfunded pension system. illinois has $100 billion shortfall in its funding of employee retirement plans, the worst in the country. the new law is expected to cut that liability by about 21 billion, fully fund their retirement system by 2044. we will watch carefully, and no one should hold their breath. labor unions are threatening to file a lawsuit to challenge the new law. that may be sincere, or it may be political theater. you will see about that. stocks ended the day sharply higher on positive developments in both the economy and in the job market, sparking speculation that the fed may choose to taper as early as this month. we will see more of the same from the fed. that will take

obama family connecting with mandela's family in south africa. again you're looking right now outside of nelson mandela's home in johannesburg where people have gathered to remember, to reflect upon the life of the man they call madeva. he is the father of modern south africa, dead at 95. >> interestingly right now a lot of south africans are asleep because it is past midnight in south africa. so they're going to wake up to this news. those who have heard, many of them, probably heard on social media. we saw some reports on twitter and facebook earlier and i want to bring in russ ptacek now who has been sort of monitoring some of the comments that some people have left. what are you finding? >> a man known for so many sayings that touched so many and at the moment this news was breaking around the world and our newsroom was scurrying the nelson mandela foundation sent out one of his quotes. i don't know if you're able to pull up my ipad here. came from the nelson mandela ch foundation and you can see it's in several different languages. i'm going to pull up the english version

, there are also 93 vacancies, 93 seats on the federal courts that have no judge in them right now, and that, therefore, could be filled by president obama if he had nominees for those seats and if those nominations could get through the senate. in june, president obama put forward three nominees for three vacancies on one particularly important federal court that sits in d.c. at the rose garden ceremony where he put forward those three nominees, the president said, "what i am doing today is my job. i need the senate to do its job." republicans in the senate, though, decided that they were going to block all three of those nominees. now, interestingly, they had no objections to any of the judges as judges. they did not even try to make the case that they found anything about them objectionable. one of the nominees worked in the george w. bush administration as an assistant solicitor general. republicans had no problem with any of these people being judges, no substantive problems. they just didn't want president obama to be able to sit his own nominees on that court, no matter who
